Amnestry International
About Us
Amnesty International is an independent non-governmental organization, a global community of human rights that is recognized in the principles of international solidarity. The association was founded in 1961 by British lawyer Peter Benenson, who launched a campaign for amnesty of prisoners of conscience. Currently it has two million two hundred thousand members, supporters and donors in more than 150 countries. The Italian section of Amnesty International has over 80,000 members.
What they do
Since 1961, Amnesty International has worked for human rights by launching campaigns on a country or a theme, creating educational programs to promote adherence to the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and organizing public events to raise awareness .
Campaigns
Amnesty international and national campaigns focus on country or theme. They involve the movement at all levels and the use of several different techniques for raising public awareness and pressure for governments violators: sending urgent appeals and actions, contacts with embassies, organizing public events, lobbying with governments and international organizations.
Human Rights Education (HRE)
For several years Amnesty International has joined the traditional commitment to the victims of human rights violations, a large and complex education project. EDU programs are not directed only at school and university but also to different contexts (professional training, socio-economic marginalization). They aim at encouraging, through the use of appropriate methods and educational resources, growth and development of knowledge, skills and attitudes consistent with internationally accepted principles on human rights.
Appointments
The Italian section of Amnesty International took part in numerous events each year in the country and organized ad hoc initiatives to stimulate activity, raise money, raise awareness of the campaign themes. Groups and Districts are constantly engaged in organizing local events and opportunities for meeting, training and awareness in the area.
